Round Brilliant Cut: Jewelry Terminology

In jewelry terminology a round brilliant diamond cut stone has multiple facets that give the stone maximum brilliance.  A round brilliant cut looks somewhat like a geometric cone. The first round brilliant cut was invented by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. Before the RB, there wasn’t a standard cut for round diamonds. Most were a mashup of rose cut, Old European or full cut diamond properties, and each cutter had his own particular style of slicing. When Tolkowsky published his thesis “RESEARCH ON THE ABRADING, GRINDING OR POLISHING OF DIAMOND,” he applied then-cutting-edge (lol) technology with his genetically inherited expertise. EGL vs GIA – Just The Facts

I’ve written a lot about GIA, EGL, and diamond certificates in general. Typically, I’m pretty passionate (read: opinionated!) But I realized that I might be missing a bare bones, to-the-point breakdown of these two major grading labs. Just the facts. So I want to share a few tidbits about each, saving my biased opinion for the end. Here we go, EGL vs GIA. EGL (European Gemological Laboratory): EGL was established in 1974 and employs a staff of over 1,100 – many of which are scientists, certified diamond graders, and educators. Why I Can’t Authenticate That Cartier Love Bangle

The two hottest posts on this blog, since the dawn of time, have been about Cartier Love bangles. One is a simple size guide, the other promises AUTHENTIC BANGLES AT AMAZING PRICES! Much like your favorite e-mail spammer. But this is no South African prince scam, RLJ really does sell authentic Cartier Love bangles, and they are pretty nicely priced below retail. Perhaps that post title explains the vast amount of authentication requests we (I) receive through our contact forms. A few times a week, I’ll get an e-mail from someone who enjoys scouring the depths of eBay as much Read More →

Jewelry Trend: Ring Stacks

The ring stack is to jewelry trends what maxi dresses are to fashion trends. They popped up in a big way, but they aren’t going anywhere any time soon. Especially now that the fashion set knows that maxi’s are simultaneously: comfortable, gorgeous, fashionable, conducive to non-leg-shaving. Ring stacks are exactly the same way (except for the leg shaving). Now that this trend has officially reached saturation, its devotees and late-adopters alike are all “This is awesome.” So no, I don’t think the ring stack is going anywhere for the foreseeable future. Further proof, the ring stack phenomenon has infiltrated bridaly jewelry, Read More →

No Hassle Tassel Jewelry

TASSELS! That’s right, this fun fringe means you can tie them on drawer handles, trim Ikea curtains with them so they look super fancy, they’re easy to make yourself, and they often come in leather. I’m a big fan. And this spring, there’s no hotter way to wear the tassel trend than on yo’ jewelry. It all started, as a jewelry trend blog post is wont to do, with a Tumblr post: And today, for Cyber Monday, Raymond Lee Jewelers is offering plenty of special tasseled goodness for 40% off, thanks to Italian design house Officina Bernardi. Officina has this amazing Read More →
