DRA-MA: David Yurman Pulls Out of BaselWorld 2013

It is official. David Yurman will not be an exhibitor at the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair this coming spring. The company has confirmed the decision, stating that “it prefers to focus on its growing international business instead.”

The cable’s out at Basel this spring.

However, the word on the watch and jewelry world street is that David Yurman is very unhappy with the booth location the line was given at the industry’s premier trading show. The yearly show takes place at Basel, Switzerland. The 2013 dates for the widely recognized fair are between April 25 and May 2. Because it is THE show for luxury watch and jewelry brands, the news of Yurman’s pull-out was quite shocking to the designer watch and jewelry world.

The drama apparently started when the trade show began to do some reshuffling of placements during renovations to its exhibit halls. At least one source revealed, though, that negotiations between the Baselworld trade show and Yurman have been rather “tense” for several years now. It is widely believed that the booth location excuse is just one of several reasons that David Yurman won’t be featuring his brand at this year’s fair.

Denying all speculations, Yurman says that the company is open to considering participation in future shows. The New York-based company stated, “With a burgeoning global business and a focus on retail and shop-within-shop properties, we have decided to market ourselves independently of Basal next year.” They went on to say that they have been strong supporters of the show in the past and that participation has “long been a highly effective and engaging platform for our company.”

Every year, the Baselworld show has about 1,800 exhibitors. More than 100,000 retailers and wholesalers pack the halls. It will be interesting to see what happens next year. All of the watch and jewelry world will be watching.
