Sunday is the one day a year we set aside for Mom. What better way to celebrate that special relationship between mother and child than the gift of pearls. Not only has there been a resurgence of pearls in fashion but pearls are the one gemstone that are created by a living creature. In essence Pearls are Born!
Pearls naturally form when a small grain of sand makes its way into the oyster or other mollusk in which pearls form. The mollusk, being irritated by the intruder, forms a pearl sac of external mantle tissue cells and secretes enzymes and nachre which is what gives pearls their sheen. This secretion process is repeated many times, thus producing a pearl. Natural pearls come in many shapes, with perfectly round ones being especially rare. There are many different varieties of pearls. Different mollusks produce different types of pearls.
There are mainly four types of pearls. They are Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian and Freshwater. When we think about the classic strand of pearls we are thinking about Akoya pearls. The culturing process was perfected in Japan. They are saltwater pearls that rarely get bigger than 8mm in diameter. They vary in shape, size, and luster. Mikimoto brand pearls are the finest quality akoya pearls available in todays market. South Sea and Tahitian pearls grow very big. South Sea pearls occur in all colors, white and golden being the most popular but also come in shades of bronze and brown. Tahitian pearls usually occur in blacks and grays with the most prized having a peacock colored sheen to them. Freshwater pearls are the least expensive and are usually not as round and can be dyed in almost any color. These types of pearls are usually used in more fashionable pieces of jewelery since they can be used in larger amounts.
At Raymond Lee Jewelers we have a wide assortment of pearls in every price range. Come in and pick out that gift for mom. Your mother will bask in the feeling that you chose something so special and meaningful that this will be a mothers day she will remember from years to come.
